Final Expense Insurance

Who pays for the funeral if you can't?

When the time comes, someone has to cover funeral costs, final medical bills, and the small debts left behind. Final expense insurance is a small, permanent policy built for exactly that. A rate that's locked in the day you apply, and coverage that never expires.

  • Paid directly to your family
  • Rate locked in for life
  • Often no medical exam

It's more than a policy. One less thing for the people you love to carry.
The idea, in one line

Final expense insurance isn't about the money — it's about who's left holding the bill. A small, permanent policy sized to funeral and end-of-life costs means your family grieves without also scrambling to pay for it. No large policy to qualify for, no complicated application — coverage that does one job, for life.

Two ways to qualify

Simple health questions — or none at all.

01 · Simplified Issue

A short set of health questions

No medical exam — just a handful of health questions. If you're approved, full coverage is active from day one, with no waiting period on your benefit.

02 · Guaranteed Issue

No health questions at all

Built for when health history has made other coverage difficult — nobody in the eligible age range is turned down. In exchange, a natural-cause claim in the first two years typically pays a return of premium rather than the full benefit; the full amount applies after that, and accidental death is usually covered in full from day one.

What it can cover

It isn't just the funeral bill.

The payout goes to whoever you name as beneficiary, with no restriction on how they use it. Here's what families most often put it toward.

Funeral & burial costs

The core purpose: services, a casket or urn, burial or cremation, and the other costs a funeral home bills for.

Final medical bills

Hospital, hospice, or other costs left over from a final illness that other coverage didn't fully absorb.

Everyday debts & bills

Credit cards, utilities, or ordinary costs — so no one has to dip into their own savings during an already hard time.

Not restricted to funeral-home use — your beneficiary decides.
What shapes it

Same policy, priced around you.

Every application is priced individually — here's what a carrier actually weighs.

Age

The earlier you apply, the lower the rate a carrier can lock in — and once it's locked, it doesn't move.

Health history

Your answers — or the lack of any, on a guaranteed-issue plan — place you on the path that fits and shape what you pay.

Coverage amount

You choose how much protection you want, typically sized to real final costs rather than years of income.

Common questions

The things people ask first.

Is this the same as a funeral home's prepaid plan?
No. A prepaid funeral plan is a contract with a specific funeral home for specific services. Final expense insurance pays a cash benefit directly to the person you name as beneficiary, with no requirement about which funeral home — or what — the money is used for. That gives your family flexibility a prepaid plan doesn't.
Do I have to take a medical exam?
No. Final expense policies are built around simplified underwriting — a short set of health questions instead of an exam. Depending on your health and the carrier, a no-health-question (guaranteed issue) option may also be available.
What's a "waiting period," and does it apply to me?
Some policies — usually the no-health-question kind — start with a limited benefit period before the full coverage amount applies; this is sometimes called a graded or modified benefit. It exists because the insurer is taking on risk without asking health questions. Not every policy has one. If a policy I recommend includes a waiting period, I'll tell you exactly what it covers, for how long, and why — before you apply, not after.
Will my premium ever go up, or my coverage ever run out?
No, on both counts, once you're approved. Final expense policies are whole life: the premium is fixed at issue and the benefit doesn't decrease or expire, as long as premiums continue to be paid.
