Fixed Indexed Annuities

Income you can't outlive.

A fixed indexed annuity lets your savings grow with a market index's gains, protected by a floor that keeps a down year from costing you principal. Add an optional rider and part of that money becomes income the issuing carrier guarantees for as long as you live.

  • Principal protected from market loss
  • Tax-deferred growth
  • Optional lifetime income rider
The idea, in one line

Most of your savings either chase the market or hide from it. A fixed indexed annuity does both: interest linked to a market index's gains, with a floor that keeps a bad year from costing you principal — and an optional rider that turns part of it into income you can't outlive.

Two phases, one contract

Grow it, then never outlive it.

01 · Growth Phase

Protected, index-linked growth

Interest is credited based on a market index's gains, up to limits your contract sets — a cap, a participation rate, or a spread. In a flat or down year, the floor holds: credited interest for that period is never less than zero.

02 · Income Phase

Guaranteed lifetime income (optional)

Add an income rider and part of your contract becomes a paycheck the issuing carrier guarantees for as long as you live — even if the underlying account value is eventually drawn down to zero.

How the protection works

Three mechanics worth understanding.

None of this is complicated once you see the pieces — and every piece is spelled out in the contract, not a sales sheet.

Principal Protected

As long as the contract is held on its normal terms, market drops don't reduce the money you've put in or the interest you've already earned.

The floor is 0% — never negative, for that period.

Index-Linked Interest

Interest is tied to a market index's performance, limited by a cap rate, participation rate, or spread that your carrier sets and can adjust at renewal.

Terms vary by carrier and contract.

Tax-Deferred Growth

You don't owe income tax on interest credited inside the annuity until you withdraw it, so your account compounds without an annual tax bill along the way.

Withdrawals are taxed as ordinary income.
What to know before you sign

No product is all upside.

An honest picture, not just the highlights.

Upside is capped

The cap, participation rate, or spread limits how much of the index's gain you receive, and you don't collect the index's dividends. You won't capture every point of a strong year.

Surrender charges apply

Contracts are built to be held for a period of years. Withdrawing more than your free withdrawal allowance during that period triggers a charge that declines over time.

Guarantees rely on the carrier

Principal protection and any income rider are guarantees of the issuing insurance company, backed by its claims-paying ability — not by a bank or the FDIC.

Common questions

The things people ask first.

Can I lose money in a fixed indexed annuity?
Your principal and any interest already credited are protected from market losses as long as you hold the contract on its normal terms. The main way to lose value is by withdrawing more than your contract's free withdrawal allowance during the surrender period, which can trigger a surrender charge. We'll go over your specific contract so there are no surprises.
What does "guaranteed lifetime income" actually mean?
With an optional income rider, the insurance company guarantees a set income for as long as you live, calculated from a benefit amount defined in your contract — even if the actual account value eventually runs out. Like every guarantee in the contract, it's backed by the issuing insurer's claims-paying ability, not by a bank or the government.
Is this a bank product, or FDIC insured?
No. A fixed indexed annuity is an insurance contract, not a bank deposit or a security, and it isn't FDIC insured. Its guarantees rest on the issuing insurance company's claims-paying ability — not on any bank or government insurance program.
Will my interest rate stay the same every year?
Not necessarily. The cap rate, participation rate, or other crediting terms can be reset by the insurance company at each contract anniversary, within any minimums your contract guarantees. Nobody can promise a specific future rate — including us. What's guaranteed is spelled out in your contract, and we'll review that with you line by line.

General information only — not a recommendation, offer, or guarantee of any specific annuity contract. Fixed indexed annuities are insurance products, not bank deposits or securities, and are not FDIC insured. Principal protection and any lifetime income benefit are guarantees of the issuing insurance company, subject to its claims-paying ability. Withdrawals beyond the contract's free withdrawal allowance during the surrender period may incur a surrender charge, and a 10% IRS penalty may apply to taxable withdrawals before age 59½.
